Good bye Social Media

Leaving social media is a strange yet important step as I move towards the world I wish to live in. Yesterday was the tipping point: I was driving home from work when Radio National reminded me that only two men —two billionaires —control 80% of the social media worldwide (excluding China). That was the ‘wake-up-now’ call. The power that those two men have is unprecedented. It took some time to work out HOW to cancel my Social Media Accounts, but it is now done, and it feels like a spring clean. I will miss the connections, the information about what is on and where it’s on, but overall I will reclaim some time—and indeed some space —replacing the media that rented space in my mind (as my new character, Mrs Weaver, would say) with real time connections, phone calls not texts, morning teas, face to face. That sort of thing. Each morning, I will continue to meditate in a group: our Sangha will continue, and I will post notices here when I cannot make it, which happens periodically. Often, the wonderful Sharon Grimley steps in to host when I am unavailable. If you are keen to meditate with us (we have half an hour of writing after the 25 minutes of meditation, which you are also invited to attend), we meet online at 6.30am Tuesday through Saturday (Saturday is 7am and it is writing/sharing only). Send me an SMS or an email through this website, and I will send you the relevant details. Till then, ‘I will make a cup of tea’ (as my character Eve would say).
